THE WATCH LIST WITH ANDREW LEGGE

“WHEN I FIRST SAW IT I’D STILL BE THINKING ABOUT SCENES A MONTH LATER AND START LAUGHING”

With time-travel thriller LOLA out now, we spoke to director Andrew Legge to see what films make him tick.

1. FARGO (1996)

“Just a classic, classic movie. I love it because it’s probably the funniest film I’ve ever seen. When I first saw it I’d still be thinking about scenes from it a month later and start laughing.”

2. THE SQUARE (2017)

“I love this partly because it’s so funny as well. There is an extraordinarily scene in that film that made me laugh for about 20 minutes. I also love the way Ruben Östlund shoots his films. Quite complex stuff playing out in single shots.”

3. THE STUDENT PRINCE (1927)

“By Ernst Lubitsch, it’s unlike any silent movie I’ve ever seen. I was very lucky to see it projected off 16mm with live accompaniment. Beautiful, moving and poetic.”

4. THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS (2018)

“I love the style of it and the fact that is a selection of short stories. I love the contrast in that some stories were funny and absurd, and others were sad and beautiful. And the characters were extraordinary.”

5. SLEEPER (1973)

“This is a 70s movie that has the comic, slapstick quality of a silent film. It almost is a silent film with the superb physical comedy.”

Honourable mentions go to:

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981)

ANNETTE (2021)

E.T. (1982)

LAMB (2021)

ANNIE HALL (1977)
