1. Festen

”I love the cinematography in Festen, how it’s shot on DV cam (digital video) and the rebellious attitude of the Dogma movement.”

2. John & Jane

“It’s so refreshing to see India in this way. I love the perspective on America and globalisation which fuels the undercurrent of the film.  So many elements existing in each story – humour, nativity, powerlessness and determination. I think it’s a really unique and thought provoking documentary”

3. El Mariachi

“The cinematography and the energy in El Mariachi is amazing. It’s very stylistic and inspiring – and it was made with $7,000!”

4. Nenette et boni

“I love the work of Claire Denis. Her characters, their stories and the scenes she creates always feel so natural and intimate. I love how the feelings and the mood of the moments are made tangible by the beautiful way it’s shot.”

5. ROMANCE

“Catherine Brelliat's work feels like an essay on sexual issues played out by various characters and stories. In Romance I love the way she reverses the sexual stereotypes of men and women in the character of Marie. The long camera gazes on Marie force you to be intimate with her and I love the internal monologues. There's a real honesty with her work. I love the controversy around the explicitness of Brellait's films. Perhaps addressed by Marie when she says 'But what you can't tolerate in life, you can't tolerate in images either'.”

Started as a way to end our scrolling during the first COVID-19 lockdown, The Watch List is a series of film recommendations handpicked for you by those in the know - actors, directors, filmmakers and writers whose work has been inspired by the films that came before them.
